If you're looking for a perfectly conventional veterinary hospital, there are plenty of them.
We built something different.
East End is an independent urgent care and surgical practice with a simple mission: help as many animals as we reasonably can.
That means practising good medicine within real-world constraints, giving people room to use their skills and building a team willing to ask whether there's a better way to do things.
So... what's a Punky Pirate?
It started as Mackenzie's slightly weird name for the kind of people she wanted around her. It stuck.
A Punky Pirate is curious enough to question things, brave enough to try, humble enough to ask for help and resilient enough to learn when something doesn't go to plan.
We care about evidence and doing things properly. We just don't believe "that's how we've always done it" is particularly good evidence.
The pirate part matters too, because we're a crew. No single person makes this hospital work. We need people with different strengths who trust each other enough to speak up, share what they know and admit what they don't.
Mackenzie's original behavioural values put it simply: grow, contemplate, have courage, stay focused, have fun, be honest, be nice and have patience.
That's still a pretty good description of who belongs here.
Use your skills.
We want veterinarians practising medicine, technicians using the skills they've trained for, students getting involved and people asking questions instead of staying quiet because they're worried about looking stupid.
East End sees a high volume of urgent and surgical cases, and our model relies on knowledgeable team members working efficiently and taking genuine responsibility for patient care.
You'll see cases, make decisions, learn from the people around you and build confidence by actually doing the work.
Nobody knows everything.
We don't expect you to know everything. We expect you to be curious enough to keep learning.
Ask the person beside you. Call someone who knows more. Read. Practise. Share what you learn. And when something goes wrong, don't hide it - talk about it, work out why, learn and try again.
East End's values recognise that medicine is constantly evolving and that learning from colleagues, continuing education and mistakes makes the whole team more capable.
Ego doesn't make better clinicians. Curiosity does.
