Our Story

East End was built on a simple idea: when the usual answer doesn't work, we should be willing to look for another one.

We thought veterinary pet care could be better.

Dr. Mackenzie Gallegos didn't set out to reinvent veterinary medicine. She just kept seeing the same problem: pets with treatable conditions, families who desperately wanted to help them, and treatment plans they simply couldn't afford.

There was far too little in between.

Mackenzie's early career took her from shelter medicine, where limited resources demanded creativity and practical decision-making, into emergency medicine, where extraordinary levels of care were possible - but often came at a price many families couldn't afford.

She started asking a question that would eventually become East End: When Gold Standard care isn’t an option, what else can we do to treat pets so they recover?

Instead of growing frustrated, she built the place she wanted to exist.

East End began as an affordable after-hours urgent care clinic. Then the cases started arriving: animals needing surgery, families who had run out of affordable options, and cases Mackenzie had previously been taught required far more extensive intervention.

So the team got to work. They treated patients, asked for help, built their skills, learned from complications and changed protocols when something could be done differently.

The result were that almost all but the wrist afflicted cases responded and the animals got better.

The idea at the heart of East End became clearer:

Good medicine doesn't only come in one expensive size.

We call it spectrum of care.

The most advanced treatment can absolutely be the right treatment. But it isn't always accessible, and it isn't always the only medically reasonable option.

Spectrum of care means understanding the ideal, then looking honestly at the patient, the evidence, the resources available and the family's circumstances. Sometimes there is another way forward. Sometimes there isn't.

Our job is to know the difference - and to help you make informed choices within your family budget.

That's why we're also collecting outcome data from our cases, looking at what works, what doesn't and where different approaches can safely give more animals a chance. We intend to publish this data so that other practitioners and families around the country can see that alternatives exist.

This is bigger than affordability.

East End exists to help make veterinary care accessible, but affordable medicine is only part of the story. We also want to build a better place to practise veterinary medicine.

That means a hospital where technicians use their skills, people ask questions and mistakes can be discussed and learned from. A place where nobody needs to pretend they know everything, good ideas can come from anyone, and people help each other through the difficult days while remembering to enjoy the good ones.

Our original values put community, resilience, education, empowerment, balance and happiness at the centre of the practice.

Those values eventually developed a quirky persona of their own.

Meet the ‘Punky Pirates’.

Yes, Punky Pirates.

It's a slightly ridiculous name (especially in professional veterinary medicine)  for something we take pretty seriously.

Punky means we're willing to question the way things have always been done. Pirates means we're an independent crew, figuring things out together and making our own way.

It's not about breaking rules for fun. It's about having the courage to question the ones that aren't helping, while staying grounded in science, evidence, education and accountability.

We believe in curiosity, kindness and practical thinking. We believe in sharing what we know, admitting what we don't, and being willing to say:

There might be another way.

That's the Punky Pirate spirit.

One crew. One mission.

Doctors, technicians, client care and students bring different skills in different roles, but the reason for showing up is the same: help as many animals as we reasonably can, reduce suffering and make good veterinary care accessible to more people.

That's been at the heart of East End's purpose from the beginning.

We're still learning, still questioning and still building.

That's exactly the point.
